I came across this wonderful journal -- One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey -- of a man, Richard Proenneke, who went to Alaska, built his cabin, built everything else (pretty much), that he needed, then staying for over a year, this first time as covered in this journal.
I am amazed at two things: that he could so easily build anything, and his attitude. There didn't seem to be anything that he could not do, regardless of what came his way. Nothing stopped him.
Given how used to we are to going to the store for everything, it was incredible to see him simply build stuff, including hinges for the door, a spring for his camera, even make a screw.
In terms of spiritual growth, it demonstrates a fantastic stance to take in the world that leads to exuberant health and well being.
