I love to work out. I particularly love to work out with weights. I always have. I have been involved in sports as long as I can remember starting in elementary school with running races and doing the long jump, swimming, playing volley ball and badminton. Then in junior high I participated in everything: basketball, volley ball, track and field. Along the way I won lots of awards. I was particularly good at the standing and running long jumps and the high jumps, actually jumping higher than my gym teacher.
Later on in life I loved aerobics and taught it at a club for a while. That's the point at which I started working out with weights as a regular workout. Later on I added yoga, hiking and salsa dancing.
I think when you're athletic, you're athletic for life and that's me. What it comes down to is that I just love moving my body in that kind of a way and really cannot do without exercise.
I know that's not at all the case with many people, though I think everyone can find some way to move their body that they like. I have talked to experienced personal trainers and the first thing they will tell you that certain bodies are not made to do certain exercise. Running is not for everyone. The bone structure is not suited for running. And so it is with different types of exercise. You need to choose a way to move your body that suits your bone structure and your body type. There is something for everyone, you just need to make a little effort and do some research. Better yet, hire a very experienced personal trainer and get help in discovering what your body likes. Walking, swimming, gentle yoga and dancing are a great way to move your body if you're not a big jumper and a gong ho exerciser.
When I was younger I liked working out at the gym. From giving psychic readings, I have learned that that social thing is very important in one's 20s and 30s. It is a way to expose the psyche to many different energies as a way to expand, grow and to get to know oneself. After that, different energies become dominant.
Anyway, after the gym workouts I started using DVDs to work out at home. My favorite workouts are the types that incorporate weight lifting with aerobics. This started in the late 80s when The Firm started creating these super hard "aerobic workouts with weights," and boy, were those early DVDs challenging, but they got you in excellent shape.
If you've worked out your whole life, you know fads in exercise come and go. At the moment, what's fashionable are the athletic training types of workouts. I've tried them and don't get anything out of them. You work very hard, but I don't experience any benefits. So, lately when looking for workout DVDs, I've gone back to the older DVDs of working out with weights with aerobic segments. Those remain my favorite workouts.
I have workouts of different lengths. The workout that suits me best is the hour-long workout. Anything less is just not enough, though sometimes I just don't feel like going that long and so have 45 minute workout as well.
I have here my absolute favorite workout DVDs and my absolute yin yoga DVD. You can also find lots of exercise DVDs at Total Fitness DVDs and Collage Video. There they have short clips of the workout so you know what you are getting. They also have yoga DVDs, dance DVDs, Pilates and everything else when it comes to movement.
The main thing with moving your body is to find a way to move it to you really like that suits your body and your personality. And then to have as much variety as possible.
